Telecommunication and Computer Networks (TCN)

Projects:

Based on an adequate analysis of the Needs Assessment, which was the first stage of the project. The consortium agrees to have the following Courses and Tutorials in TCN field to support smart cities operations in Palestine.

Course 1: Multimedia Technologies, Networking and Applications

Introduction to Multimedia: Multimedia Importance, Driving Forces in Multimedia, Multimedia development tools and hardware. Video Coding: Entropy and Info Theory Background, Lossless Coding/Entropy Coding, Lossy Image Coding, Video Signal Processing. Video Communication: QoE metrics, Source-Channel Coding and Error Resilience, Media Transport, Congestion Measurement and Control, OTT Video Streaming Standards, Overlay networks and P2P video streaming. Overview about Computer Vision and Machine Learning applied to Multimedia in the context of Smart City: Object recognition and tracking, Action recognition, Mobile Surveillance Systems.

Course 2: Internet of Things (IoT)

In this course, students will explore the three basics insights of the Internet of Things: Why do we want to connect everything? What do we want to connect? And how do we connect everything?

A typical IoT solution includes sensors, local analytic abilities, network connections, and the ability to process and analyze the gathered data. Overall it is important to understand how a product or a process or a business overall can be improved with the instrumentation and the collection of data. It all starts with the connection of a sensor to a gateway and from there to the network and the cloud.

Course 3: Wireless Sensor Network

This course provides an introduction into the fundamental concepts and building blocks of wireless sensor network (WSN) design. Through a project, the course gives the students hands-on experience in designing a WSN networks using a fully equipped lab.

Tutorial 1: Design and Implement Multimedia Applications

Common video compression parameters and standards. Methods and tools used for sensing and streaming video content. Computer vision and machine learning algorithms applied to video content. Applications of Computer Vision and Machine Learning in the context of Smart City: security surveillance, traffic monitoring, people counting, and action recognition. Develop bespoke video related applications to serve smart city services

Tutorial 2: Wireless Networking Technologies

This tutorial offers a broad understanding of a range of modern wireless communications systems and networks. This course is based on modules. The participants can drop few modules based on their previous experience. The course provides a solid understanding of:

  • Wireless networks, technologies and protocols.
  • A comprehensive, vendor-neutral coverage of wireless solutions and supporting technologies.
  • Radio Frequency (RF) and microwave fundamentals
  • Basic Antennas and MIMO Techniques, Basics of RF Planning
  • Basic of WiMAX
  • WiMAX Network planning
  • WiMAX operations
